Three posts in a row, what a nice change of pace. Anyways...
In today’s news, I have now ridden the bike a whopping six times on the entire trip to date. It seems that somehow every trip I get out on the bike, something seems to go wrong, from the first time I set foot upon the 30 year old Schwinn, breaking the derailer, to having the Canondale run over on my watch while taking a short break. Today’s incidents were not so crazy, but still a pain. When first starting out, I managed to pop the chain off of the gears, wedging it between the gears and the frame of the bike. After that got fixed, we got to climb a nice hill. After getting to the top of the hill, just as we were about to enjoy a nice downhill, I exploded my tire. Just as we were about to get a replacement on, that popped. Finally, we got one on, I took off, only to have Matt and Dad meet me a few miles down the street. As it turns out, Dad followed my lead by blowing tow tires of his own just after fixing mine. Friday the 13th got the best of the Roche’s for the day, and we decided to throw in the towel.
The only camp site we could find was an impromptu dirt site just outside of town. Apparently this is due to every motel in a town of 2000 being full, despite there being 9 different motels. Apparently there is oil in these here hills, and illegal immigrants are flocking here to work, occupying all hotels, motels, and most of the best campsites. So in this remote part of Wyoming, apparently we are S.O.L. To quote the commercial I got the nickname Hemi from, “Sweeeeeet”. On an interesting side note, this town, called Kemmerer, is the site of the first J.C. Penney’s. Thrilling stuff, totally took away from the fact that we had to camp on a dirt site for the next two nights the day after we see our first rain in over a month. And on that note, I’m off for now for yet another game of Yatzee with the Roche boys.
