8/3/2007

As I write this, we three Roches are stuck in the van in the middle of a monster storm. Hail, strong winds, incredible bursts of rain, and some amazing lightening made it fun to watch for the first 5 to 10 minutes, but as it’s now starting to get a bit dull, I thought I would sit down to write this, as it’s been a few days. Since the last post, we’ve actually seen a nice little bit of this weather to date. The lightening caused us to take one day off to this point, but that hasn’t been all bad. Part of the upside to that has been living out of the hotels around here. I must say, getting a bed every other night is a luxury I could get used to on this trip, and am sure to enjoy when it comes to a conclusion.

Other than that, the storm, and resulting day off, allowed us another chance to get to the movie theatres, this time to catch the new Simpsons movie. I’m glad it wasn’t my money spent on the ticket, let me say that. It really followed the pattern of the Simpsons lately, really, just letting me down. Its been years since I really enjoyed the show, and seeing as how much I used to enjoy it, I figured the movie was worth a shot, but I don’t know if I’ve outgrown the Simpsons or if the writing has gone downhill that much, but it really just didn’t do it for me. No, what I’m really looking forward to movie-wise is the release of the Bourne Ultimatum, which actually came out today, I believe. The Bourne series has been great to date, and although I’m not a huge Ludlum fan when sitting down with a book, the movies created from his story lines are great. I think that, and Rush Hour 3, could again continue what has been a summer filled with some great flicks to date.

Other than that, since our return to Wyoming, I’ve been able to put in another 50 miles on the bike. It’s getting better and better out there dealing with the distances, now that the back and legs are getting conditioned for it. It was enjoyable despite the majority of the ride being decent sized hills. My only serious problem with it was the construction that went on for the final 20 miles of the ride. With some cones running down the middle of the road, drivers decided they wanted to drive in the emergency lane rather than get within a few feet of a cone, god forbid. People have really got to learn how to drive out here, its pretty absurd. They ought to know you can get close to cones without the possibility of it magnetically attracting to your vehicle. It was at its worst with the trucks, which have a tougher job in that situation, no doubt, but my sympathy went out the window when one almost took me out with his freaking side mirror. Can’t wait to get back to Mass, where the drivers may be insane, but at least they know how to properly work their vehicles.
Speaking of being back in Boston, it is a great time to be a Boston sports fan. If you have somehow not heard, the Celtics managed to snag Kevin Garnett away from the Timberwolves. I have to be careful, because with this being published online, but those three, combined with the potential atmosphere in the Garden, which we’ve seen in glimpses over the past years, could easily take us to the finals. Also, what kind of veteran wouldn’t want to sign up to play with those three, if not this year, than with the mid-level exception next year? At the very least, I think my buddy Tommy’s job, as a Celtic’s inside ticket sales rep, just got a whole lot easier. I know if I wasn’t broke, I would be throwing down for some ticket packages, if not season tickets. But hey, that’s just me, I was thinking about that anyway before either trade (well, it was either that or the Revs). And it’s not only the Celtics to be excited about. With the Pats, we finally have a receiving core to pair with Brady, not just a group of players who weren’t good enough to stick with any other team in the league. An offense to possibly match our defense, doesn’t that sound nice? And then with the Sox, we still have a rather comfortable lead over the Yankees. Not only that, but we went out and stole their potential bullpen help right out from underneath their noses. You can never have enough good bullpen arms, and Gagne is just one more to add. Not only that, but we got rid of Joel Pineiro, which again can only help improve our bullpen. When Schilling gets back, we’ll have a great rotation, and with Delcarmen, Okajima, Gagne, and Papelbon (maybe even a healthy Timlin?), they only have to really get through five innings, with anything more really being bonus. If the offense, which we know is capable of producing some big runs, can pick it up, we’ll be a tough team for anyone we come up against. All in all, I am psyched to have been raised a fan of these teams, and its going to be a great fall.
